Instructional Design

Content Development

Graphics  |  Interactions  |  Multimedia
My understanding of instructional design theories, methodologies, and best practices allow me to design materials to reach target audiences for each specific project. I strive to create engaging instructional materials for on-ground, online, and hybrid modalities.

Multimedia: When and Why to Use
  • When multimedia suits the purpose of instruction
  • When multimedia supports and enhances the learning
  • When multimedia is universally designed for all learners
  • Because the piece will increase student engagement and interaction with the content
  • Because a variety and novelty of mediums increases increases memory retention

Short Film in Curriculum

Not every human culture in the world is literate, but every single culture tells stories.
Short film format is particularly well-suited for online learners who want short, sharp bursts of edutainment they can watch at work, at home, or on their mobile devices.  Short films are useful for single lessons- they offer a complete narrative in a short space of time, which captures and holds learners’ attention quickly while avoiding cognitive overload. Narrative storytelling is ancient tool with enduring power. It is the oldest form of education. Our brains are hard-wired to think and express in terms of a beginning, middle and end. It's how we understand the world. Storytelling provides learners the opportunity to connect and relate to characters, or see the world literally from within someone else’s skin. Narrative structures very often provoke much stronger responses from students than traditional texts. Some students experience difficulty connecting to drab textbooks or abstract concepts. However, those same learners typically have little struggle connecting to stories, which make learning more relevant, and more engaging. Recent research on recruitment and retention of at-risk students revealed that many short films address issues such as racism, sexism, human rights, criminal justice, and ethics which are very relevant to the lives of students who are perfectly capable of dealing with these subjects.

Lightboard Test

LIGHTBOARD is a lecture-recording tool that allows the instructor to face the audience while presenting information on a transparent surface. This tool is especially beneficial for math and science lessons. The instructor writes normally on this surface as they are speaking.  Later in video post-production the writing is flipped so the flow of writing does not appear to be backward.  An additional benefit is that PowerPoint presentations can be applied to the image in post-production.  The drawback of the tool is that currently it can only be used in a studio setting.

RedFlint Innovation Center

In collaboration with the College of Information Systems & Technology and experts in the field of cyber security, I created three workshops on cyber hygiene and vulnerability for RedFlint powered by University of Phoenix. The RedFlint Innovation Experience Center is a place for people to come and learn, explore and create new ways of doing things. My role involved redirecting a stalled development plan to create curriculum with tech thought- leaders in cyber security for the hands-on innovation center and small business accelerator.
